Questgen sells an AI quiz generator web app to teachers, schools, students, HR teams building compliance assessments, textbook publishers and edtech companies, and its founder reported $4K a month as of 2024-08.
What it sells and how it charges
Questgen takes source material in the form of text, PDFs, URLs, images or video and turns it into assessments. According to the official website, checked on 2026-10-01, it can generate multiple-choice questions, including questions with multiple correct answers, true/false questions, fill-in-the-blanks, higher-order questions, match-the-following questions, FAQs and Bloom’s taxonomy quizzes in one click.
Generated quizzes can be exported to PDF, QTI, Moodle XML, CSV and other formats. The stated uses include creating worksheets for teachers and schools and producing compliance assessments for HR teams.
The official pricing page, checked on 2026-10-01, lists a free Basic plan with 20 free runs. Its Pro plan is $15/month or $100 billed yearly, in USD, with unlimited runs under fair use.
How it started
In a founder interview dated 2024-08-21, the founder said he began exploring AI and edtech concepts in 2020. After speaking with edtech companies that outsourced quiz creation, he viewed AI-generated quizzes as having the strongest technical growth potential among the ideas he had considered.
Before building the web app, he packaged his quiz-generation knowledge into a Udemy course. In the same 2024-08-21 interview, he said the course made $10k USD in a little over 2 years.
He was not initially a full-stack developer, so he learned no-code tools and built the first SaaS version on Bubble.io. That version used a simple text input and output, with authentication, storage and Stripe payments added later. As AI-assisted coding improved, he learned full-stack technologies and rebuilt the system in NextJS because the no-code tools did not support advanced features such as streaming.
He first launched through LinkedIn and Twitter, then launched on Product Hunt a year later. In the interview, he also described building in public and announcing new features on social media.
The numbers
The dated income figure is $4K a month. It is founder-reported, as of 2024-08, in the Starter Story founder interview dated 2024-08-21; it is not platform-verified and should not be treated as current income.
Questgen is listed as a one-person company because the founder describes himself in that interview as Questgen’s “solo bootstrapped founder.” No employee count or total start-up cost is stated, although he says the business was bootstrapped with API costs only.
What stands out
- The product connects several source formats, question types and export formats within one web app.
- Its first version was built with Bubble.io before being rebuilt in NextJS to support features such as streaming.
- The founder attributes growth to SEO, older blogs and GitHub code, alongside social media and Product Hunt, and describes relying on SEO rather than paid ads.
- Both the one-person classification and the $4K a month figure depend on the founder’s own account, with the income amount tied to August 2024.
